"Step Up for Kids" Message Delivered in Duluth E-mail

At a press conference at Playfront Park in Duluth, public figures addressed the needs of children with one overarching message: we must invest in our children now or we will end up paying for it in the future. Speakers included City Councilman Tony Cuneo, County Attorney Melanie Ford, Exavier Bell with Community Action Duluth, State Representitive Mary Murphy, and State PTA President Rosie Loeffler Kemp.

In her opening remarks, ECM Minnesota Director Jennifer Rison said, "It is unfortunate that in the wealthiest nation in the world, we must strive to inspire a movement to care for those who can least care for themselves, but it would be more unfortunate to continue to ignore this need."

She continued, "There are a lot of striking statistics and appalling numbers that advocates like me use when attempting to persuade elected officials and the general public to act for change, but the problems faced everyday by the 150,000 children in Minnesota who live in poverty and the 85,000 who do not have health insurance cannot and should not be reduced to simple facts and figures."
