Child abuse cases rise in upstate South Carolina E-mail

Two measures of Upstate SC child abuse rose as the economic recession wiped out jobs in what experts said could partly be a reflection of growing frustration among unemployed parents.

“Parents and families are under much more stress than they ever have been,” said Shauna Galloway-Williams, executive director of the Greenville Rape Crisis and Child Abuse Center.

The center saw 435 children in the first eight months of this year, a 33 percent increase over 2008, Galloway-Williams said. The number of children under 2 years old more than doubled from 10 to 22, she said.
