On Wednesday, June 18, ECM President Michael Petit and NH State
Director MaryLou Beaver traveled to Long Island, NY to provide training
to child care professionals on advocacy strategies and election-year
organizing techniques. This was an accelerated program of the Every Child Matters Institute, which offers advanced trainings to professionals in child-serving organizations throughout the country. The day-long training day was sponsored by The Hagedorn Foundation at Molloy College in Farmingdale.
Nearly 50 child advocates, providers and program directors from around Long Island attended the training to learn from the expertise that Every Child Matters has developed over the years working in grassroots community organizing around elections. The training was focused on how groups can make Long Island’s children a priority in the upcoming November elections.
The conversations with colleagues were lively, and the ideas were flowing. Plans are underway to organize a “Step Up for Kids Day” event on September 16th and rally at the Presidential debate at Hofstra University on October 15th.
The group left electrified and ready to build a strong network dedicated to raising the issues facing children with the candidates, the media, and public in the next months leading up to the Presidential election.
