Get Involved: Help shift the debate for health care reform towards kids! E-mail
For the next few months the overriding focus in Washington is likely to be health care reform. Legislation is being debated in several Congressional committees, and President Obama has called for a bill to be on his desk before the August recess. However, the topic of children has not received major coverage so far. At Every Child Matters, we believe that discussion of this reform must include how children are going to be covered, and what will change for the millions who are covered through Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program. As the debate continues, we will continue to keep you updated on how the health reform process relates to children.

Children's Health Programs Losing the Fight E-mail
Providers have found themselves doctoring a new national health crisis: the budget. The exam room is no longer the battle ground where lives are saved and lost. As Medicaid reimbursements to providers fall, as much as 40%, the physicians are finding their greatest battles are fought in state capitol buildings. Places where children are out of sight, and seemingly out of mind.
 
Arizona Cuts Services for Kids and Taxes! What's up with that? E-mail
Arizona’s kids’ organizations are speaking out against a budget that would leave 25,000 children and 9,000 parents without health insurance. Further, it would slash services for kids with disabilities and shelter for victims of domestic violence and at the same time cut taxes by $250 million! Timothy Schmaltz with the Protecting Arizona’s Families Coalition rightly asks, "’Where is the compassion in that in the middle of a recession?’" The Children’s Action Alliance’s Dana Naimark calls upon the legislature to “go back to work and use brain power, compassion and courage to pass a ‘fair’ budget.” To read the article, click here.
