Step Up for Kids Day '08

Every Child Matters in Nebraska joined with children, families, and allied organization for a rally on the capitol steps to raise the visibility of Nebraska's children in the elections.

ne_stepup2.jpgWe gathered on the north steps of the capitol as part of a nationwide event held in cities across the country to draw attention to issues affecting America's children. Speakers included Dr. Will Austin, Associate Professor, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Dr. Tom Tonniges, Director of Pediatrics at Boys Town, Senator DiAnna Schimek, District 27, Deila Steiner, Lincoln Public Schools, Director of Federal Programs, and former foster youth, CindyWoodbury.

US Senate candidates Mike Johanns and Scott Kleeb were in attendance, along with 2nd District House candidate Jim Esch and several State Senate candidates. Local partners included Voices for Children in Nebraska, the Nebraska Association of Social Workers, UNO School of Social Work, Nebraska Appleseed, the YWCA, the Center for People in Need, Camp Fire USA, NeAEYC, the Nebraska Head Start Association, and Child Saving Institute. ne_stepupshoes.jpg
