State Campaign in NH Launched PDF E-mail

Hand PrintsSurrounded by thousands of handprints made by kids and under dark clouds, Every Child Matters in New Hampshire officially launched our state campaign to raise the awareness of children in the upcoming November elections. Victory Park in Manchester was the setting on Saturday, June 28th for parents, elected officials, state employees, advocates, childcare providers, members of the press and yes....children. Lots of children!

Our main speaker was Manchester Mayor, Frank Guinta, who brought along his wife and two young children. He talked about the issues that his city's children face and the Mayor Frank Guinta importance of ensuring that every child has his or her needs met everyday.

Several people from partner organizations spoke as well. Jackie Cowell of Early Learning NH addressed the crowd about the need for quality early care and learning programs. Cynthia Billings, from Plus Time NH, reminded us why after school programs are so important for those hours between 3 and 6 pm. Annie Farnsworth of NH Voices for Health reviewed her group's efforts to ensure that all of NH's children have access to health care.  Ellen Fineberg, from the Children's Alliance of NH, emphasized the need to protect our most vulnerable citizens from child abuse and neglect. Terry Smith, the Director of the Division of Family Assistance for the State of NH, described his work spearheading a group addressing child well-being within the Department of Health and Human Services.

We also heard from parents like Esther Diamondstone of Manchester, who is raising children while living on state assistance, and Lynn Dumont of Manchester, whose children are enrolled in the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Face paintingThe weather was inclement, but it did not dampen the spirits of the children. Face painting was hands-down the favorite activity, and an ECM volunteer, Anna Cross, did a fantastic job as the artist! The kids also enjoyed games of twister, jump ropes, hula hoops and musical chairs.

By the time the event ended at 2:00 our table of materials was nearly empty. T-shirts and bumper stickers were a big hit. Parents left with plenty of information and armed to ask the candidates running for every office in NH what they are going to do to ensure that Every Child Matters in NH.

Thanks to the other organizations who help us: The Citizens Alliance, NAMI NH, NH Voices for Health, and The Children's Alliance of NH.
